What is DAN?
Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit medical and research organization dedicated to the safety and health of recreational scuba divers. Founded in 1980 in association with Duke University Medical Center, DAN underwrites a wide range of research, education and training programs that promote safe diving.
What does DAN do?
DAN is a multi-faceted organization, though all efforts are aimed at increasing and improving dive safety. We work in the areas of medical services (the 24-Hour Diving Emergency Hotline, the Medical Information Line, dissemination of medical information), diving medicine and research (Flying After Diving, Diabetes and Diving), training (including programs for divers, professionals and medical professionals), Membership and insurance programs. What are the benefits of Membership?
There are four types of DAN Membership – Student, Individual/Family, Pro and Business.
- Student Membership – is a free program providing $20,000 of recompression treatment insurance during the course of entry-level training. Available to all entry-level student divers, Student Members receive a DAN Student Membership Card and ID number, DAN Emergency Info Tags and a copy of Giant Stride magazine, DAN’s publication dedicated to the new and prospective diver and provided free of charge to Student, Business and ProMembers.
- Individual/Family Membership – provides benefits to DAN Members including TravelAssist (up to $100,000 of worldwide medical evacuation coverage and assistance), a subscription to Alert Diver, monthly product specials, special product pricing, the online Member Discount Program, the DAN Dive Travel & Medical Guide, automatic entry in a monthly drawing and, of course, access to DAN Dive Accident Insurance.
- ProMembership - Full professional membership in DAN is reserved for dive professionals who also teach DAN Training Courses to the recreational dive community. All DAN Instructors and Instructor Trainers are DAN Pro Members. DAN Pro Members can teach DAN dive safety programs and receive the On Board/Oxygen Window quarterly newsletter. Associate ProMembership is available for any dive professional who wishes to participate. As either a Pro or Associate ProMember, you will gain access to a dedicated area on the DAN website especially designed for DAN Instructors and other professional members. This area has information about DAN and DAN programs, as well as teaching tools and presentations to help make you a better diver and dive instructor. Pro and Associate ProMembers also have the opportunity to participate in a Points Rewards Program.
- Business Membership – is a resource designed to benefit businesses and provide a way to let their customers know of their focus on safety. In addition to exposure to DAN’s more than 220,000 members, benefits of Business Membership include: special pricing on DAN Products, a Points Rewards Program, Eligibility to participate in DAN Trip Insurance Incentive Program, a listing on the DAN Website, access to dedicated areas of the DAN website, the OnBoard and HighViz Newsletters and a dedicated toll-free hotline linking you directly with the Business Membership Team.

What kind of training is available?
DAN provides comprehensive training to the dive community by disseminating the latest information on topics related to diving safety through articles, reports, seminars, online seminars, lectures and training programs. Courses currently offered are:

- Advanced Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries

Is DAN worldwide?
DAN is represented worldwide by several DAN affiliates. In addition to DAN Americas, these include DAN Europe, DAN Japan, DAN Southern Africa and DAN Southeast Asia Pacific.
