Internship Program : 2008 Interns & Hosts


Adam Shoelson - A native of Natick, Mass., Shoelson is a sophomore at University of Richmond in Virginia. He is majoring in biology. He plans to attend medical school. A Master Scuba Diver, Shoelson has made dives in the Bahamas, Hawaii and Papua New Guinea. For the past three years, he worked at Mass Diving in Natick, Mass. where he gained valuable dive industry experience. Shoelson is the 2008 Our World Underwater Scholarship Society intern. He will work at DAN Headquarters in Durham with Petar Denoble M.D., senior research director, studying the effect of first aid surface oxygen on decompression injuries. Shoelson will conduct follow-up phone calls to divers who have received or have administered surface oxygen for symptoms of decompression illness. He will also collect data for Project Dive Exploration, DAN’s multiyear data-gathering effort.
 
David Bottenhorn – A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Bottenhorn is a senior at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. He majors in sports management and exercise science. He plans to continue studying hyperbaric medicine. A divemaster and avid sportsman, Bottenhorn has conducted dives in the Bahamas, Caribbean, Florida Keys and also in the cold waters of Alaska and Lake Michigan. This summer, Bottenhorn will collect PDE data in Scapa Flow, Scotland and will work with Bobby Forbes of Heriot-Watt University. While this will be the third year Forbes has hosted a DAN intern, he collects PDE dives year-round.
 
Matthew Gill – This Barnsley, England native completed his master’s degree in Human and Applied Physiology at the Kings College in London. At DAN, Gill will work with Richard Vann Ph.D., vice president of DAN Research, and the staff at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology at Duke University Medical Center. Projects include the Flying After Diving Study, CO2 study and NASA-EVA study. During his internship, he will assist in the design and implementation of a new research study and assist in the preparation and presentation of scientific materials.
 
Elizabeth McCadden – A native of Glen Mills, Penn., McCadden is a junior at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Penn. A physics major, McCadden is also a rescue diver with additional certifications in PADI Medic/First Aid, DAN Oxygen Provider and Nitrox. She will collect PDE data for DAN at Ocean Frontiers in Grand Cayman. Ocean Frontiers as hosted interns for the past four years.
 
Katherine Suek – The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she received a degree in communications in December 2007. She is a rescue diver and is certified in Emergency First Aid, DAN Oxygen Provider. Suek works for A1 Scuba in Denver. There she is working to become a divemaster. As a DAN intern, she will work with Research Physiologist Neal Pollock Ph.D., on various research projects involving breathhold diving. She will assist in preparing scientific papers and presentations. She will also collect PDE data off the North Carolina coast.
